- First of all, I'll acknowledge that Dr. Kittel's remarks here were
- probably directed more at the individual to whom he was responding
- than everyone of the Amiga advocates on USENET. Nonetheless...
-
- Dr. Peter Kittel (peterk@combo.ganesha.com) wrote:
- : Aha. Me and Olsen and Heinz reading and writing here (you followed up
- : to one of my postings!) are just imaginations? And still, it doesn't
- : help too much when we know what you here on Usenet want, you are all
- : a rather small, elitist group with very specialized requirements, which
- : is not representative for the bigger market we are selling to. And we
- : know this, because we also listen to our customers who *buy* Amigas
- : and not only argue about them.
-
- I've got to take exception here. I have bought 4 Amigas since 1986
- (A1000, A2000, A3000, and an A4000). My mother bought her own. A former
- girlfriend bought her own.
-
- I'd consider buying a 5th, 6th, and 7th once I see:
-
- 1. A healthy commitment by the manufacturer (AT under Escom OR VisCorp).
- I thought that I saw a glimpse of this from Amiga Technologies under
- Escom but now the possible acquisition by VisCorp, successful or not,
- raises new concerns!
-
- 2. A healthy return of third party hardware developers and/or the
- (re)development of add-ons (ethernet cards, multi-serial cards,
- BridgeBoards and/or Emplants, controllers, modems, etc.).
-
- 3. A healthy return of third party software developers and/or updates to
- (pre-)existing products (e.g. SAS/C, ADPro/MorphPlus, T-RexxPro,
- ProPage, ProDraw, ProCalc, etc.).
-
- 4. Perhaps more importantly, utility software that takes advantage of the
- Amiga's inter-process communications (IPC) strengths. Amiga
- Technologies should be actively promoting the development of IPC tools
- to integrate Amigas with other (networked) platforms.
-
- In 1987, I saw the Amiga as *THE* machine to develop a "multimedia market"
- then I created Multimedia Business Answers about 5 years ago. My hope
- was to develop a turn-key development system using off-the-shelf products
- and my own IPC code to integrate "ARexx friendly" applications.
-
- I believe that the original design prinicples of the Amiga, true
- multitasking with IPC, dedicated custom co-processors, and other shared
- resources, make it a natural for all of the possibilities on the
- soon-to-be-implemented "information super-highway"!
-
- In my mind, the Amiga has one (and only one) chance to become successful:
-
- 1. VisCorp has the right idea...create a low-cost set-top box to provide
- the (currently) most coveted information resource to consumers - the
- World Wide Web and entertainment. But this is just the "front door".
-
- 2. Offer a low-cost computer (the Walker) to enhance the capabilities of
- the set-top box and function independently as a computer.
-
- 3. Offer a productivity machine (PowerAmiga) capable of allowing consumers
- to be *contributors* to the "information super-highway" by being able
- to process and develop their own content (even tele-video).
-
- All of the ingredients are there now, although a little stale. Amiga
- Technologies should promote the Amiga as *THE* (affordable) machine/OS to
- be a CLIENT, an information PROCESSOR, and a SERVER for the "information
- super-highway".
-
- There should be new networking/communication cards in production. There
- should be new software applications to process the various types of
- audio/visual/text information. There should be new provisions in the
- operating system to allow these things to happen (I still don't like
- memory protection...too bad people can't play by the rules)!
-
- The bottom line is that I still think that the Amiga has the best overall
- operating system and basic design to do all of these things, for less
- than the price of buying a high-powered UNIX workstation. Doing anything
- less than everything would be futile if the Amiga is to realize any
- significant success!
